Fandom: DC Universe

Because our fandom is so large, it acts like a much smaller fandom.

…Wait, let me try that again. In addition to approaching a century of comics canon, there's also canon from spin off movies, from spin off tv shows, from tv shows now only available on the black market in Asian countries, and from comics which spun off from the spin off tv shows. Our fandom has more canon than the Bible, and is as difficult to reconcile. It's impossible to be familiar with all of it, so most fans stake out a corner: a book, a character, or a team they like, and inhabit it. DCU is less a fandom than a loose collection of small interlocking fandoms. Fans tend to segregate themselves by their canon, rather than their 'ships, or by het vs. slash.

FAQ:
What is the DC Universe?
Books published under the DC imprint are assumed to take place in the same fictional universe. Books published by DC under the Vertigo or Wildstorm imprint don't necessarily take place within the DC shared universe, but are are considered within the DC fandom and included in this guide.

The [info]dcfic_index is a no posting community that exists solely to track fic written within the DC universe. These can be found, sorted, in the memories.

The Legion fic and art community is at [info]sprock_you not [info] & there is a Legion discussion community at [info]legionnaires.

OffPanel links to a number of DC Comics/General Comics yahoogroups MLs. I have no idea how active they currently are, though.

Oh... I didn't mean anything by that, just that I hadn't personally checked any of them out. But it's a very impressive links page!

I wasn't really sure how to describe Offpanel. Is that okay, or is there some better description?

The Gas Station is an lj community dedicated to discussion, fic, art and pretty much anything relating to the Static Shock cartoon.

Basically, it's the same as Dakota Bangs, but older.

Well... Canonically, the Sandman books do take place in the same universe as mainstream DCU (I seem to recall an early appearance by the Martian Manhunter in a bathrobe and Dream), but I'm afraid I'm not up on the rest of those titles. Probably technically in the same universe while rarely crossing over? They're not very compatible in tone. This could be a good question for [info]canonistas.

For what it's worth (minimal), the [info]dc_slash_index morphed into the [info]dcu_slash_index back in 2005. Not certain there's much to add to it at this point; the lists are as good as dead, mostly serving as pointers to fic on lj. But [info]dcu_slash_index will remain as given, as an archive list of pre-lj DC slash fic.

Offpanel links page...needs to be cleaned up again. :p

Hi! Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that I've been amassing my own list of DCU-centric LJ communities. I've got easily twice or three times what you have listed here, just in the DCU-specific comms (and my eyes are bugging out because of it! :p), and I plan to post the completed list to both my personal LJ and to [info]dcu_freeforall. If you'd like, I can send you the list when it's fully complete, so you can update this. Also, do you mind if I use the format you used here? It's so organized and pretty! ^_^
